THE LAPLAND EXTREME CHALLENGE
Around 1000 k through the Lapland's wilderness in winter
THE LAPLAND EXTREME CHALLENGE IS NOT A RACE,
IS YOUR OWN PERSONAL ARCTIC WINTER CHALLENGE.
To complete the Challenge you have to do the tour following the official waypoints and recording your track with a satellite tracker device (no GPS!). Then, if you want to have your name in the finishers list you have to send us the full track by email.
Since 2013, the Lapland Extreme Challenge is based in doing around 1000 k tour around Finnish Lapland in winter in a maximum of 30 days. Is a sefl-supported human powered challenge. This challenge is no possible to do it by FatBike, best way is with wide or long skis (forest skis, OAC skis or splitboard) and universal bindings.
The Challenge start and finish in Rovaniemi (Lapland's main city) and runs through the Finnish Lapland wilderness. On the way, you can find shelters and free cabins but also you will have to do bivy and in some towns you have the posibility to sleep in hotel if you wish.
THIS IS A REAL CHALLENGE. Since 2013 only 3 athletes had finished the Challenge. To have the chance to survive and success is essential to have a very good experience in winter traverses and long winter journeys.
YOU CAN START ANY DAY YOU WANT, but the best periode to start the Challenge is between middle and the end of February. Also is ok to start any day untill the 15th of March for less cold temperatures and longer day-light days. What is very recommendable is to finish the traverse before the middle-end of April, due the snowbreak.
YOU CHOOSE YOUR STYLE. In previous editions we saw different styles. Some people sleeped in hotels and/or private houses (if people invite them) and some others didn't. Some people carried a tent and some people didn't. Everybody can take advantage of shops and supermarkets you'll find in the way or take your chance and carry all your meals at once. Your style is up to you.
YOU CHOOSE YOUR WAY. There is no marked route, so you take the track you want, you design your way, stop when you want and sleep where you want to arrive to the next mandatory waypoint.
FOLLOW THE OFICIAL WAYPOINTS. To successfully do the Lapland Extreme Challenge, participants have to go through the oficial waypoint, no matter if clockwise or opposite.
FINISHERS LIST. Whoever do the Challenge and like to be in this web page finishers list, must record the whole track and do a check-in with the satelite device at every waypoint. Once you had finished, you have to send us the track by email.
TEMPERATURES. Between February and beginning of March, temperatures could reach or even over exceed -30ÂșC.
LIGHT HOURS (approximately). Increasing between 8 hours (end of February in Rovaniemi). Every 7 days, light time increase by 30 minutes in Rovaniemi.
